Training at Ellesmere Medical Practice
Why come to Ellesmere?
Ours is a small rural practice based on a small market town in North Shropshire in wonderful unspoilt countryside with lakes known as meres all around the town.

We enjoy the benefits of being the only practice in town but membership of the local out of hours co-op makes the on call commitment very light. We are a 3 ¾ partner equivalent practice provided by 5 doctors, looking after around 7,000 patients.

The town itself still has a sense of community which usually makes it easier to look after people as their friends and neighbours rally round when someone is ill. A small point but it makes the doctor’s life a lot easier.

The town is about 20-25 minutes from Shrewsbury and Chester, the main shopping and social centre - about mid way between the two. We are also close to superb walking in the Berwyn Mountains in mid Wales.

We have three local hospitals and a community hospital 10 miles away, with post graduate medical centres at Wrexham and Shrewsbury.

What about the training?
We have a long history of undergraduate training and have been involved with postgraduate training for 16 years. There are two approved trainers in the practice but all the doctors and staff get involved in the training to allow multiple perspectives on primary care, we regard training as a team effort and very much focus on the individual’s learning needs. We also feel that the register year is a time for sorting out your consulting style and so emphasis is on quality not quantity, until you feel confident about speeding up.

Within the practice we have 3 GP Appraisers and a QOF Assessor. So we have a range of expertise to ensure that our training is always up to date with the current issues in primary care. The health visitors and community nurses are also experienced in training so we feel that we are truly a ‘training practice’.

The local VTS is at Shrewsbury and has a good reputation with previous registrars, providing a diverse programme devised around the registrars needs.

We value the opportunity to give people the benefit of an ‘apprenticeship’ with the security of a close relationship with experienced and enthusiastic trainers. Your training year should be a time that you look back on with some fondness and it is the quality of the relationships that create that.

What about the on-call?
We are part of Shropdoc, our local out of hours co-operative, and the on call commitment is very light.

Will I see enough to learn?
We have a range of patients, from Lords and Ladies in stately homes to quite marked rural deprivation, so that there is a range of experiences available.

What are our strengths?
Number one is our enthusiasm for education and trying out new styles and techniques.

We have been paperless for 8 years now and continue to look at new ways of developing our use of IT, but we aim to combine this with the best of personal, patient-centred care. We think within our team we have a range of different styles and attributes that allow a registrar the chance to see various styles of practice.

We have three female and two male doctors so that we have a range of ages and an even spread of male/female doctors.

We have a good practice team and have a lot of laughs a lot of the time.

What about weaknesses?
We have the same difficulties as anyone at juggling work/home life, but that also means we understand when it gets difficult.

So if you’re looking for a well rounded training, tailored to you, in a nice part of the world with enthusiastic trainers then this is the place for you.
